Aquarius Design is a jewellery, giftware and accessories wholesaler and manufacturer. We supply independent retailers and chain stores in the souvenir and fashion industries, tailoring our products and services to meet our customers’ needs.
Paua shell specialists, our souvenir division is inspired by New Zealand’s natural environment and traditions. We are continually producing contemporary styles for the souvenir market with the strong international appeal.
Founder Robert Greville initially began a part-time business touring the North Island of New Zealand selling shell jewellery and steadily establishing a following in both local and tourist markets. Due to the increasing demand for his products, Aquarius Design Limited was formed in 1987 in Kaitaia, New Zealand.
Paua jewellery was gaining popularity and Aquarius Design quickly became a market leader. With good design, production and distribution facilities, the business went from strength to strength, selling souvenir and fashion jewellery.
After outgrowing the original Kaitaia premises, Aquarius Design moved to Auckland City in 1994 to accommodate further expansion. The company was established on and still upholds solid values of outstanding design, affordable product, quality manufacturing, efficient distribution and talented people. Some of the original employees are still with the company today.
The intense colour of New Zealand Paua is only found in the seas around Aotearoa (New Zealand). Its vibrant shell makes it a much sought after souvenir of New Zealand. Crafted into jewellery using only premium shells, our designs work in harmony with Paua’s natural beauty.
With one of the most extensive natural and dyed paua jewellery ranges available, Aquarius Design remains a market leader in souvenir jewellery. Our own retail branding, in-house design studio and factory allows us to continually develop unique products and ensure our high-quality standards are maintained.
Paua is a species of Abalone [Haliotis Iris], which is a type of mollusc, unique to New Zealand. The meat is a local delicacy and the shell is mainly used for making jewellery. Paua is properly managed in a sustainable way using a quota system. Additionally, the shell can only be caught by free diving and there are minimum size requirements.
